Dialysis (also called hemodialysis) is a process that takes your blood from your body and passes it through a machine which filters and removes most of the same waste that the kidneys would remove. Physicians primarily use dialysis to take the place of lost kidney function. It is important to note that for chronic kidney failure, this method typically does NOT help the kidneys heal. Therefore, it is usually a life-long routine unless the doctors perform a kidney transplant.
How long does hemodialysis take?
How long hemodialysis takes varies and depends on how many hours of treatment your doctor ordered. Hemodialysis is actually a form of dialysis. It usually last three to five hours. Another form of dialysis is continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) which takes longer. Finally, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) involves shorter but more frequent treatments.
