Alert: Protein Drinks Contain Poisonous Heavy Metals

Consumer Report purchased 15 protein powders and drinks and tested multiple samples of each for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. The results showed that all 15 protein drinks contain poisonous heavy metals in considerable amounts.  The levels in three products were of particular concern because consuming three servings a day could result in daily exposure to arsenic, cadmium, or lead that exceeds the limits proposed by USP.

Which Protein Drinks Contain Poisonous Heavy Metals?

To know which shakes are more poisonous, we have to compare their contents to the proposed USP limit.

Myoplex Above Heavy Metal Limit for Arsenic and Cadmium

Based on this chart, three daily servings of the ready-to-drink liquid EAS Myoplex Original Rich Dark Chocolate Shake exceeds the proposed USP limit of 15 µg per day for arsenic.  It also exceeds the proposed USP limit of 5 µg per day for cadmium. Though the concentrations in most products were relatively low, the  large suggested serving size (the number of micrograms per day for a few of the products) was high compared with most others tested.”

Muscle Milk Above Heavy Metal Limit for Lead and Arsenic

The samples of Muscle Milk Chocolate powder tested contained all four heavy metals, and levels of three metals in the product were among the highest of all in the tests. Three daily servings of Muscle Milk Vanilla Crème exceeded lead and arsenic limits.

Heavy Metals Lead to Kidney Damage

Since heavy metals such as mercury and cadmium  accumulate in the kidneys and can cause excessive kidney damage, having these substances in a protein drink is cause for great concern.  It takes the body 25 years to eliminate half of the mercury consumed in one day and 20 years for cadmium.  Even worse is consuming both of these highly toxic metals at once increased their dangerous effects.

Add this to the fact that most people have other sources of exposure to these substances and we have a major problem!

Bad Food Choice #3: Most Restaurant Food

your body your choice

Bad food choice #3 deals with most restaurant foods.  Over 100 years ago, there were very few meals eaten in restaurants. We ate home cooked meals from food that was grown locally in soil full of nutrients, thereby causing the food to be rich in nutrients also. Today, many people eat EVERY meal from a restaurant that has no concern for nutrients. The restaurant’s concern is for appearance, taste and texture because those are the things that will cause you to like the food enough to pay high prices and keep coming. So, we now have people filling up on food that has no nutritious value for EVERY single meal.  As a result, the body will keep requesting more and more food hoping that you will finally give it the nutrients it has been asking for.  Satisfy your body.  Give it the food it truly needs and it will stop asking you to eat more!

Bad Food Choice #1: High Sugar with Low Fiber

your body your choiceHIGH SUGAR WITH LOW FIBER RELEASES INSULIN

If you take a close look at the way food naturally exist, you will find that most foods with a lot of sugar also have a lot of fiber. The fiber holds onto the sugar and causes it to be slowly released. When you remove the fiber and just eat the sugar, the sugar rushes to your blood stream all at once raising your blood sugar level too high. When the blood sugar level gets too high, the body releases insulin.

Most people think that the true job of insulin is to bring down the sugar level. WRONG! That is like saying that the true job of a mechanic is to change tires. Yes, that is a part of it, but such a little part of it. The true job of insulin is to put your body into fat storage mode. To accomplish this, the insulin will make changes at your thyroid gland, liver and male and female private body parts to keep you still so you won’t keep using up the energy you have told your body to store as fat.  The more you sit still, the more weight you gain.

How do you prevent this?  Only eat high sugar foods if you have the fiber present naturally or because you added it back into the food.

Why We Over Eat #1: Bad Food Choices

your body your choiceREASON #1: BAD FOOD CHOICES

If you are making the wrong food choices you can be giving your body the signal to make fat. This will cause your body to try to store the calories you eat as fat instead of burning them off. In order to turn the calories into fat and not burn them off, your body must make some major changes to slow you down and make you feel sluggish so you will be still and sedentary rather than get up and move and jump all around.

So what are some of the bad food choices we often make?

Tell us what you think and them read the next few posts to see the bad food choices that we will give.

Fructose and Kidney Stones

SodaFructose in sugar-sweetened sodas may raise the risk of kidney stones

Drinking sugar-sweetened soda may lead to kidney stones.

Researchers tracked more than 194,000 people for roughly eight years. Those who drank at least one serving of sugar-sweetened cola a day had a 23 percent higher risk of kidney stones than those who drank less than one serving a week. Likewise, those who drank at least one serving of sugar-sweetened non-cola a day had a 33 percent higher risk than those who drank less than one serving a week.

Researchers suggest that their fructose may raise the risk of kidney stones by making kidneys excrete more calcium, oxalate, and uric acid. (Most kidney stones are made of calcium oxalate.)

What can we do about the arsenic in our rice?

Fried Rice There isn’t much that we as individuals can do about the arsenic in rice at this point. Since it seems impossible to remove the arsenic from the rice once it is in there, the only completely safe thing to do is minimize the amount of rice you eat. Quinoa, eaten in moderation, is an excellent substitute if you find that you are able to eat it.

For those of you die-hard rice fans, some sources say that you can remove some… of the arsenic by cooking it in an excessive amount of water the way you would cook pasta noodles. I have tried this. It does seem to decrease the arsenic a bit. I have even tried bringing the rice to a boil for a few minutes and then pouring the water Bowl of Riceoff and refilling the pot with fresh water to boil the rice again. I have poured out the water and refilled the pot 3 or 4 times when cooking the same batch of rice. Unfortunately, quite a bit of arsenic remained in the rice.

So here are the facts as best I can tell. We would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Please post anything that you have done to successfully remove the arsenic from your rice before you eat it.

Do Organic Products Have Pesticide Residues?

Organic foodThe 1995 definition of organic production by the National Organics Standard Board notes that “Organic agriculture practices cannot ensure that products are completely free of residues; however, methods are used to minimize pollution from air, soil and waters.” These methods include buffer zones between conventional and organic fields, a three-year waiting period before previously non-organic land can be used for organic crops, and placing organic products in storage on the higher shelves to avoid cross contamination from non-organic products.

Products are tested by certification agencies for contamination:

  • If there is a complaint.
  • For regular spot-checking of certain crops.
  • If there is any evidence of contamination.

What does all of this mean? Consider this: Will the pesticide residue from non-organic farming still be in the soil 3 years later when the soil can be used for organic farming? ABSOLUTELY! At least, that is what the current research indicates.  Therefore, there will definitely be pesticide residues such as arsenic in the soil for the crops to absorb.

Though the steps taken for organic farming do not totally eliminate the problems created by pesticides, they are a huge step in the right direction. If soil used for organic farming could never again be used for non-organic farming, then we could hope that eventually the crops would have absorbed all of the residue that they can absorb. Then we could hope for pesticide free produce. However, if farmers are allowed to keep switching the placement of the organic and non-organic crops, then the problem will persist.
