Adrenal fatigue symptoms start with the fight-or-flight response. This makes a lot of sense when you really stop and think about it. First, let’s think about a scary movie scene. A person is running in the woods at night trying to get away from the bad guy. The camera usually flashes one scene after another all around the woods. As the person runs, they try to pay attention to every part of the woods. Why? Because they don’t know which part the bad guy will jump out of. The fight-or-flight response is much like this. Your body sends most of your nutrients and blood flow to your arms and legs so you can run away from or fight the bad guy. Your mind switches to surveillance mode so you can pay attention to everything and get the first indication of where the bad guy is appearing so you can run in the opposite direction. This means that you don’t focus on any one thing; you have to try and be aware of everything. This is what can make you appear to have ADD or ADHD. In this situation, your adrenal glands are pumping adrenaline as fast as they can.
The Adrenal Glands Become Overworked
With prolonged activation of the fight-or-flight response, the adrenal glands can become overworked. The adrenal glands may even get stuck functioning at maximum capacity and become fatigued. In the natural health world, we call this adrenal fatigue. This is not a diagnosis; only physicians can diagnose. Adrenal fatigue is simply a term we use to refer to this situation, since we need a way to state what we are talking about! Since the traditional medical world tends to ignore this situation, it simply treats symptoms while overlooking the root cause. In the natural health world, we believe adrenal fatigue is a serious situation affecting many people today. What is needed is to begin understanding adrenal fatigue so that we can address the cause and stop just treating the symptoms.
What Is Adrenal Fatigue?
Adrenal fatigue occurs when the adrenal glands are overworked by stressful situations, leaving them exhausted and unable to function properly. Once they are no longer able to function properly, they will not release the proper hormones, leading to improper signaling for proper sleep patterns, chronic tiredness, and trouble thinking clearly.
