DEHYDRATION & HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Watery, loose oatmeal.             Dry, stiff oatmeal.

Dehydration and high blood pressure can be better understood by thinking about oatmeal.

Think of your blood as oatmeal. The cells would be the pieces of oats. Your blood cells are floating in a clear watery liquid. Very watery oatmeal will run out when you turn the bowl upside down. Why? Because gravity is strong enough to pull the oatmeal from the bowl. If you put too little water in your oatmeal and it is very thick, it will NOT run out of the bowl when you turn it upside down. Why? Because gravity is NOT strong enough to pull the thick oatmeal from the bowl. This is what happens when you don’t drink enough water and end up dehydrated.

Heart, Aorta

Normally, the heart squeezes and pushes the blood up into the aorta and the blood falls down out of the aorta where the aorta bends. This is like turning the bowl of watery oatmeal upside down. However, when you don’t drink enough water, you don’t put enough water in your blood causing your blood to become too thick. The thick blood cannot fall down at the bend of the aorta. This is like turning the thick bowl of oatmeal upside down.

When the blood is too thick, gravity will not be strong enough to pull it down to your feet. Therefore, the muscles have to begin squeezing to push the blood down to your feet. Once these muscles squeeze, they increase the blood pressure inside the blood vessels causing what physicians call high blood pressure.
So, what is the best way to eliminate high blood pressure? By drinking the proper amount of water, of course!
If you are taking medicine for your blood pressure you will want to check your blood pressure daily and record the numbers for your physician.  When you see your blood pressure numbers beginning to drop, it will be time to discuss the possibility of lowering the dose of your medications with your physician.  Once you start drinking the proper amount of water, ALWAYS check your blood pressure before taking your medicine.  If your blood pressure is normal before you take the medicine, contact your physician’s office and let them know what your numbers have been for the few days before, give them your current numbers and ask how they want you to proceed.

There are times when drinking the proper amount of water will not eliminate your high blood pressure.  In these cases, you may want to consider some of the other root causes for high blood pressure such as mercury exposure from amalgams “silver fillings” in your teeth.
