The iris is the colored portion of the part of the eye that you can see. While the macula in inside the eyeball not visible to you when you look at a person. To view the macula, you have to look inside the pupil with a special magnifying tool. 
The iris determines the color of the eye. It is also responsible for controlling the diameter and size of the pupil and thus the amount of light reaching the back of the eye. While the macula contains a very high concentration of photoreceptor cells that detect light and send signals to the brain, which interprets them as images.
